Parkinson's Awareness Month: Understanding and Combatting PD

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurological condition characterised by four principal motor symptoms: tremor (shaking), muscle rigidity (stiffness), bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability (balance issues and falls). It stands as the fastest-growing neurological disorder worldwide, with up to 50 Australians receiving a diagnosis each day.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with PD, the good news is that there are a number of early intervention strategies available to help maintain a good quality of life for years to come. Assembling a care team to address various aspects of your wellness journey is an excellent first step. By identifying the symptoms that most significantly impact your life, you and your care team can explore options such as exercise, medications, and therapies tailored to your needs.

At ERRS, we acknowledge the impact that this condition has on the lives of individuals and their families. Recognising the critical role of exercise in managing PD, we have developed our specialised PD Fight Club program. This initiative has been purposely designed to be safe, accessible and beneficial for individuals at all levels and stages of Parkinson's Disease, aiming to enhance balance, mobility, and strength for daily activities.

For those living with PD, exercise provides a wide range of benefits, including:

  • Driving neuroplastic changes in the brain
  • Improving balance and stability
  • Increasing strength and muscular endurance
  • Enhancing cognitive function
  • Boosting mood and emotional well-being
