Stronger Together: Group Exercise for Diabetes Management

‍

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a common condition where the body’s response to or production of insulin is impaired. It typically develops over time and is often linked to physical inactivity and poor diet. Managing blood sugar levels is crucial for individuals with diabetes, as prolonged periods of high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications.

Fortunately, exercise is an effective way to naturally reduce blood sugar levels! When muscles contract, GLUT-4 transporters on cell walls activate, moving sugar from the blood into the muscles to produce energy. These transporters are stimulated during both aerobic (cardio) and strength training exercises, making it important to incorporate both into your routine.

About the Program

Exercise Right and Rehab (ERRS) is a purpose-built rehabilitation, exercise and fitness hub designed to support patients with significant medical conditions.

Our team of Exercise Physiologists specialise in creating individualised exercise programs for people with T2D. Group exercise is the most effective and affordable approach and we offer several joining options, with classes available throughout the week to fit your schedule.

Benefits of Exercise for Diabetes Management

Regular exercise can help:

  • Improve insulin function, enhancing diabetes management
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Decrease stress

It is recommended that individuals with diabetes engage in:

  • 150-250 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week
  • Strength training of major muscle groups 2-3 days per week

How Much Does It Cost?

Exercise Physiologists are recognised by Medicare and some private health funds. For people with T2D, funding is available through your doctor via the Commonwealth’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan or the T2D Group Exercise Program.

Speak to your GP to learn more about accessing these subsidised group classes.
