Vertigo is a common and disabling condition that affects people of all ages! For Australians over the age of 50, vertigo exceeds 36%!
A type of dizziness that makes everyday tasks difficult, vertigo is often described as feeling that you are spinning or that the world is spinning around you, particularly made worse with head movements and changing positions from lying to sitting/sitting to standing. It can come on suddenly and intensely, making it one of the most unpleasant and debilitating conditions to experience.
The most common cause of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). This condition is caused by crystals in the inner ear (vestibular system) becoming dislodged and accumulating at the bottom of the canal.
This can lead to interference in the flow of liquid within our inner ears which are essential in helping our brain determine our sense of balance. When there is a change of flow in this liquid, it can make the brain become confused by the information it is reading, resulting in this sensation of âdizzinessâ as the brain tries to figure out what is going on.
This is where we come in! Our Physiotherapists can treat vertigo and dizziness!
Physiotherapy is particularly effective at eliminating these crystals through a series of specific movements and targeted home exercises. Our team specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with vertigo, restoring their vestibular system and eliminating dizziness!
