Do you have a difficult ankle?

By Jason Wells. February 26th, 2024.

Often, badly sprained ankles do not fully recover, leaving the injured individual with limited mobility and chronic pain. Instability is a term used to describe this feeling of reduced support, typically accompanied by pain.

Common ankle injuries, including ligament tears and fractures, are usually accurately diagnosed, with established examination protocols and management principles commonly utilised in orthopaedic settings.

A syndesmosis disruption is often a more subtle underlying pathology involving tearing of the ligaments at the end of the shin bones. It often causes feelings of instability, catching pain with walking, swelling, and restricted ankle movement. Confirming this diagnosis involves stressing the joint combined with X-rays performed in a standing assist position. Depending on the severity of the injury and clinical symptoms, early surgical intervention may be necessary to prevent long-term disability.

Due to the intricate nature of the ankle and foot, a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, a thorough examination, and clinical expertise are crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective management.

Having a healthcare team that collaborates closely is essential for a successful recovery, and this includes a great physiotherapist who liaises directly with your surgeon and communicates with the general practitioner.
